Bad Maths Habits

I am putting together a collection of what I see as my pet hates and the bad habits that many students often have developed in maths. I have not found any other resource that seems to show this so I thought that it would be a good idea to make a start.

What I would encourage you to do is take a sheet of paper and answer a question then check the video. See if you have developed some bad habits. I have tried to keep each question as short and as easy as possible to demonstrate a point.

Example 1

To start off I have set this question. Try it first as if it were an exam question.

Example 2

In this next example I give you a simple area to work out. Two rectangles joined together. The problem is very easy as you will see in the video but questions that require multiple stages are often written down poorly. Without giving too much away, please try this. Get a pencil and paper and lay your solution out as if it were given in an exam. Show all working however simple.

See Example 2

Example 3

In this example you are asked to write down on a piece of paper what the square root of 5 is. Seems simple enough but will you give the correct answer?

Try it and see.
